Caching is I think a spectrum, some operations are so cheap and fast that caching them is not worth it. It can be taken to the extreme: Salsa, Buck. In my experience, there is usually one main expensive operation in the system (in my case: Markdown parsing), and adding a cache in front of that is generally sufficient.
